Autónomo in Spain explained (starter guide)
Publicado: 2026-04-12
What “autónomo” means
In Spain, autónomo is the default self‑employed regime for individuals. It connects three worlds at once: tax agency (AEAT), social security, and your day‑to‑day invoicing.
The three habits that matter most
1) Clean invoices
Your invoices should be sequential, include the right identifiers, and apply IRPF retention and IVA rules correctly for your activity.
2) Quarterly rhythm
Most autónomos need a predictable quarterly cadence (payments and filings vary by profile). Miss one quarter and you will spend the next one catching up.
3) Expense evidence
Spanish practice rewards organised evidence. Keep invoices classified and avoid “maybe business” expenses without documentation.
Common early mistakes
- Mixing personal spend with business cards “for convenience”.
- Ignoring municipal obligations that can still apply depending on activity and location.
- Waiting until December to discover what should have been smoothed across the year.
